India handed offspinner Jayant Yadav an ODI debut as they chose to bat in the series decider in Visakhapatnam. MS Dhoni, India’s captain, based his decision on the expectation that the pitch, which looked hard and likely to be good to bat on, to slow down as the match progressed. Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, wasn’t too displeased to be bowling first for the first time in the series, and reckoned dew would come into play under lights.

Jayant, a bowling allrounder, replaced Hardik Pandya in India’s line-up, while fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the fourth ODI, came back into the side in place of Dhawal Kulkarni. Jayant’s inclusion, and Pandya’s exclusion, meant India’s attack contained three spinners and two seamers.

New Zealand made one change, bringing Corey Anderson in for Anton Devcich. Anderson, however, will continue to play as a specialist batsman because he is unable to bowl as he recovers from a back injury.
